NEW YORK -- Today, Democratic Attorney General nominee Letitia “Tish” James announced her plan to protect New York’s water from harmful toxins. With the Trump Administration threatening to roll back regulatory protections, walking away from its Superfund cleanup obligations, and using the Long Island Sound as a dumping ground, the Attorney General can play a critical part in ensuring New Yorkers have safe and clean water. At the press conference announcing her plan, Tish also received the endorsement of the New York League of Conservation Voters.
“There is perhaps no more basic necessity than clean water. Yet, the Trump Administration is knowingly allowing polluters to contaminate our water sources while rolling back critical protections. The Trump Administration is putting the health, safety, and lives of New Yorkers at risk. As Attorney General, I will use every power at my disposal to investigate and litigate against anyone threatening to take away the right to clean water,” said Democratic Attorney General nominee Letitia “Tish” James.
Highlights of her plan to protect New York’s water include:
Suing the companies responsible for contaminating drinking water sources, ensuring clean water is restored, and that impacted communities are given the resources necessary to make them whole;
Establishing a Water Safety Fund to provide towns and localities that have unsafe drinking water the resources they need to begin to address problems as they find them;
Protecting New York from fracking infrastructure like pipelines, power plants, and compressor stations;
Investigating and taking legal action to protect children from lead poisoning;
Litigating to protect the Hudson River from EPA neglect or malfeasance following years of contamination;
Continuing litigation to prevent the Long Island Sound from being used as a dumping ground;
Litigating to stop the EPA from gutting the Clean Water Act.
“Letitia James has a record of fighting to protect New Yorkers against environmental and public health hazards like lead and emerging contaminants. Clean water is a basic human right that too many New Yorkers are forced to fight for every day. And with Washington seeking to roll back environmental protections, we need a leader who will go to the mat for clean air and clean water. We are confident that James will fight for the environment as Attorney General. NYLCV is proud to stand with Letitia James in her election for Attorney General and we urge New Yorkers to cast their ballot for her this fall," said Julie Tighe, President of the New York League of Conservation Voters.
Earlier this week, the Sierra Club endorsed Tish, saying that “no state office holder may be of more importance to New York in the era of Donald Trump than the Attorney General and the Sierra Club strongly believes that Letitia James is the ideal candidate to protect the rights of women, minorities, immigrants, workers, our healthcare system, and our environment from the cruel regulatory rollbacks at the federal level.”
“New York needs a strong fighter to serve as Attorney General -- and that person is Tish James. Tish is the fighter that we need to protect the Hudson River, and the surrounding land, against those who want to pollute and destroy our natural resources. Safe clean water is our goal -- and Tish James will help us achieve that,” said Westchester County Executive George Latimer.
"Access to clean water -- the lifeblood of our existence -- is every New Yorker's right. Tish James is clear that she will be an Attorney General who insures that right is a reality," said Assemblyman Tom Abinanti, who represents the 92nd Assembly District
